  Catnipped

Sabella Smith was pouting. At twelve years old, she didn’t want to keep going through these stupid tests. Turn into a cat. Turn back into a human. Over and over again. Do it in water, do it in the dark, in the light. How much can she carry in her mouth? How big—could she carry files? Cameras?

Those were stupid questions, Sabella decided. What she wanted to know was: who were her parents? Why had she been born in isolation, and why did she belong to the government?

All she knew was that she was a secret weapon. She could turn into a cat and spy on people, and retrieve small items out of places that people couldn’t access.

And she had no life. She couldn’t be a kid; she couldn’t ever do anything she wanted to do.

The only person who had ever been nice to her had a family. She’d followed him home from work a couple times when she’d managed to escape the facility where they kept her. He had a wife, and a daughter, and she’d sometimes sit in their window sill and watch them be together. She envied the closeness she saw in their family, and she was curiously drawn to the daughter. She wished she could experience that for herself.

She normally wasn’t the type to steal, but she’d watched the man give the daughter a silver necklace with a cat charm on it. It had light blue sapphires for the cat’s eyes and something about the neck piece appealed to her. She stole it, by sneaking into the house and rummaging through the girl’s jewelry box. She knew it was wrong, and she almost felt guilty for taking it from his daughter. But she knew he could afford to replace it, and after everything she’d done for his career by existing, she deserved a little trinket.

“I’m going to be late for class again, Daddy. I need to go!” Lilly tried to dig the keys out of her father’s jacket pocket while he was attempting to put it on.

“Lilly, take the bus like a normal college student and stop expecting me to let you borrow my car every time you sleep through your alarm,” her father told her.

“You don’t understand; my science prof is an absolute cougar. She’ll eat me alive if I’m late. She locks the lecture hall doors two minutes after class starts. If you aren’t there, you miss it and lecture hall is worth a huge portion of our grade. She gives us weekly tests on what she went over in lecture hall, and if we fail more than one, we are kicked out of her class. She’s evil.”

Lilly knew it was her fault. She’d stayed up too late texting her best friend, but she was still young and couldn’t be perfectly responsible all the time. She needed some kind of life.

“Lilly, this is the last time, I’m serious. Either that or get your own car.” Her father sighed and handed her the keys.

“Well, my birthday’s coming up. You could always buy me a car for my twenty first birthday!” Lilly grinned at him and gave him a quick kiss on his cheek before running out the door. She got behind the wheel and started it, then backed out carefully and drove the fifteen minutes it took to get to school.

Her dad made enough money to buy her a car. He had a good job with the government. She never knew exactly what he did, and she didn’t ask. Some questions she realized she didn’t want the answer too. What she knew without question was that he could afford to buy her a car; he just was being stubborn about insisting she buy her own. She’d get her way eventually; she usually did. After her mother had died from cancer, he’d pretty much given Lilly everything she’d wanted for the last eight years.

Lilly made it to class, just in time. She could smell her professor’s perfume as she walked past her. Something shiny caught Lilly’s attention and she noticed a small, silver cat with sapphire eyes nestled between her professor’s breasts. The professor’s sweater was just low cut enough that she could see the whole cat.

Thinking it looked familiar, she went to her seat and sat down, trying to take notes and focusing on the lecture. But Lilly found herself distracted by the swell of Professor Smith’s perfectly round breasts, with the silver chain dangling between them.

At the end of the lecture, Lilly realized that her notebook was almost empty. Usually Lilly was a diligent student, but today she’d been too distracted. Staring at the three random words scrawled in the margin, Lilly realized there was no way she could pass this week’s test without study material. She’d just have to suck it up and ask Professor Smith to help her so she won’t fail.

But everyone else had left the lecture hall, and the professor was on her way out. Heart beating quickly, Lilly called out, “Professor Smith?”

“Can I help you with something?” Turning, the young woman looked at Lilly and a slow, cat-like grin appeared on her face.

“I was trying to take notes and I was struggling to keep up today. Do you have any additional reference material I can read through to make sure I can pass this week’s test?” Lilly hadn’t even realized she was holding her breath in fear the teacher would reject her request. Professor Sabella Smith wasn’t known for being an easy teacher.

“No, I don’t. But this week we will be doing an actual lab test. If you want to swing by tonight, I can go over the lab work material with you, in the actual lab. Consider it a one-time freebie,” Professor Smith said.

Sabella normally would never help a student like this, but she felt like she owed the girl a favor, since she’d stolen Lilly’s necklace when they were both children—Sabella was only six years older than Lilly. Winking at the girl, she took her purse out from under the lecture desk and locked the lecture hall behind them.

Lilly’s dad had done everything for Sabella. And of course, he’d never known she’d taken Lilly’s necklace. Not long after she’d stolen the necklace, Sabel
la found out they were shutting down the government program. After spending millions of dollars on her, they were scrapping everything.

John had promised he’d make sure nothing bad happened to her, and he kept his promise. He’d found her a military family to live with who would help her go to college, but she had to promise that no one could ever find out she was a cat. If people found out that the government program had used a baby in a science lab to splice DNA and use genomes to create a cat shifter for military purposes, they’d kill her.

No one could ever know she existed.

It was a lonely way to live, but Sabella honored that promise to him, even twelve years later when she was a college professor. She’d never allowed anyone to get close to her, because relationships and secrets didn’t go well together. It wasn’t like she had much of a choice.

Survival was her number one priority.

But now something else was niggling at her—something more than survival. Desire. Lilly was a beautiful girl. She had curly dark hair, pale skin, and curves that reminded Sabella of one of those pin-up girls from the fifties. Lilly reminded Sabella of winter nights spent indoors. Something about Lilly made her think about catnip and rolling around in the carpet in front of a warm fire. Shaking her head, she tried to clear her thoughts. No matter that Sabella was young for a professor; it was inappropriate to be thinking of a student like this.

  ***

Thanking Professor Smith, Lilly saw the necklace one more time. It looked extremely familiar, and she could’ve sworn she’d had one just like it. She was going to investigate that when she got home, because her dad had told her he’d had it custom made for her, and her name was inscribed on the back. What would the odds be that it had somehow landed in her professor’s possession after all these years? Who was Professor Smith exactly? Lilly didn’t know anything about her history, as this was her first year teaching her and no one knew anything about her, except she was private, she was tough as nails, and she had the reflexes and hearing of a cat. No one got away with anything in her lecture hall.

The guys had joked around about taking the class to get close to Professor Smith, but she never blinked twice at any man. Lilly had seen Smith licking her lips when she’d looked Lilly over, and for a split second, Lilly wondered if she swung the other way. She didn’t want to think of her professor like that, but it was hard not to.

Only having had one boyfriend in high school and it not amounting to anything, Lilly had never felt a strong pull to accept dates from the men in college. Never having dated or been with a woman before, Lilly definitely appreciated their feminine wiles. And Sabella Smith was no exception.

Smith might be older, in her mid-twenties, but she had golden hair that had a slight wave to it that hung down her back, green eyes, and the body of a lithe dancer. The only thing that stood out against her tiny little body was her abundant cleavage. Lilly was intrigued, but first she wanted to find out if that necklace was what she thought it was.

The appointed time came, and Lilly entered the lab. She tried not to stare at her professor’s breasts, but it was hard. They were large, and her sweater was low cut. The dangling necklace between them drew Lilly’s gaze.

“That necklace looks really familiar. I had one like it as a kid,” Lilly said and reached out to touch it before she could stop herself.

Professor Smith hissed in a breath when Lilly’s fingers skimmed against her flesh.

“Lilly, as your professor, I must request that you keep your hands to yourself while we are in the lab and on school property,” Professor Smith told her quietly. “If you would like… to go for a coffee afterwards, we can talk about the necklace.”

The way Professor Smith said it caused Lilly to pause. There was attraction between them—Lilly wasn’t just imagining it.

“Did you know my father?” Lilly asked her bluntly. Her father had recognized Sabella’s name when she’d texted him about the necklace after class. He had told her he’d discuss it with her later, but to be careful that Sabella Smith was not what she seemed. The air of danger and intrigue had all that much more interested in her professor. She was a beautiful woman and Lilly had never really found herself attracted to a woman before.

Until Professor Smith. Her catlike, almond-shaped eyes, the way she almost seemed to purr in her throat when she was happy, the graceful way she carried herself. All of those things had Lilly wanting to stroke her professor’s hair and skin. The cleavage that showed had Lilly wanting to rub her face against it. Her breasts looked so soft and bouncy, they were filling Lilly’s mind with naughty images she almost didn’t understand.

After working for an hour together, Professor Smith gave Lilly a smile. “I think you’re up to par now. I’m confident you’ll pass the next quiz.”

“Thank you so much,” Lilly said.

Professor Smith yawned and stretched back. Her breasts thrust out and she bent over backwards of the edge of her chair.

Lilly watched her breasts rise and fall as her professor stretched. When Professor Smith sat up, Lilly was blushing slightly, having been caught staring at her tits.

“You ready for that coffee?” Professor Smith asked her, smiling.

Lilly couldn’t find her voice, so she nodded and grabbed her backpack.

Sabella took Lilly to her favorite coffee shop. It was quiet and they had a great deli with fresh meat every day. Sabella was very picky about her food and this was one of the only sandwich and coffee places that had food to her satisfaction. Luckily, they catered to university students and stayed open late.

She ordered herself a mocha and a turkey sandwich. Taking it to a quiet, back booth, she waited for Lilly to order and join her.

“Thanks for inviting me here, Professor Smith,” Lilly said as she slid into the seat.

Sabella took a tiny sip of her mocha. “Please, call me Sabella.”

“I like that,” Lilly said with a smile. “Sabella. So, Sabella, my father knows you.”

Sabella couldn’t speak for a moment, shocked.

Lilly continued, “I asked him about you, because your name sounded familiar to me.”

“I see,” Sabella said. She tried to hide her discomfort by taking a bite of her sandwich. But Lilly’s gaze rested between Sabella’s breasts.

“That necklace was mine, wasn’t it?”

Sabella looked down. The necklace lay against her perfect, flawless skin, and before she knew what Lilly was doing, Lilly reached out and touched the metal cat. Her fingers brushed against Sabella’s cleavage with a warm shock, and Sabella hissed out a breath.

“We are in public, Lilly,” Sabella whispered, nervous. She had the urge to stalk Lilly like prey, cornering her until she was squirming with delight, but this was not the time or place for it, and she didn’t want a scene if Lilly freaked out about the necklace. Or what her father had told her. She had no idea exactly how honest Lilly’s father would be.

“So, finish your food and take me somewhere private. We need to talk. Tonight.” Lilly raised a brow. She drank a sip of her coffee, but her bagel she’d ordered sat there untouched. She seemed too busy watching Sabella eat.

The girl seemed entranced with Sabella, and a rush of pleasure spread throughout Sabella’s body. There was something between them, something warm and electric. Lilly’s scent of peaches and cream filled the air, and Sabella wanted to get lost in that scent, get lost in her.

Sabella finished her food, and then waited for Lilly to follow her. She offered her a ride in her car back to her house, and Lilly hesitated for a moment, then shrugged her shoulders. Getting into Sabella’s car, Lilly fastened her seatbelt and sat quietly while Sabella drove the few miles to her house.

Sabella’s house sat at a corner lot, with no neighbors touching it. She waited for Lilly to climb out of the car, and invited Lilly inside. She tried to see the house from Lilly’s point of view. It was a clean, almost sterile environment. There was minimal furniture, just basic essentials. Sabella liv
ed simply.

“You don’t have much here,” Lilly commented. “I can respect that. No clutter getting the way of thoughts and feelings.”

It sounded like a total come-on, but Sabella knew they had some talking to do.”

“I’m assuming you have questions for me,” Sabella said, eyeing Lilly.

“That necklace, let’s start there,” Lilly said. She looked as if she’d reach out to touch it again, but Sabella stepped back.

Sabella nodded. She didn’t want to talk about any of this. Beneath her fear, there was shame and guilt at what she’d done. But Lilly was waiting. She was patient, at least, which made Sabella want to please her even more. “Okay. It was yours. I worked with your father, when I was a kid up until the time I was twelve. It was a specific government project. He never took me to meet his family, but we’d grown close for a while, until they defunded the project and I had to find a…new job. I was young, and stupid, and I envied your family, and you. I didn’t have a family. I saw the necklace and I took it. It was yours, and I’ll give it back to you if you want it. I know it wasn’t right that I took it, but it was the only thing I ever had that I valued. It sounds strange, but the necklace has always reminded me of you.”

“Okay, go back,” Lilly said. Her blue eyes were shining—whether with anger or fear, Sabella couldn’t tell. “So you took my necklace. I knew it looked familiar. I don’t even want to think about that part right now, or how you got into our house to take it, but after all these years, if it really means that much to you, just keep it. What I want to know is why my father thinks you’re dangerous. Why did he tell me to avoid you, and why did he seem worried when he heard your name?”

Sabella sighed in relief. Lilly’s questions would probably cause a problem in some ways if she told Lilly the truth. But that worried her less than the idea of giving the necklace back. It was the only thing she had from those years, and the only piece of Lilly that she’d been able to keep with her.
